Ranking Member McGovern Welcomes Congresswoman Torres to House Rules Committee

WASHINGTON, DC — House Rules Committee Ranking Member Jim McGovern (MA-02) today welcomed Congresswoman Norma Torres (CA-35) to the committee following the Democratic Caucus vote on Leader Pelosi’s nomination of Torres this evening. Congresswoman Torres joins Ranking Member McGovern, Congressman Alcee Hastings (FL-20), and Congressman Jared Polis (CO-02) on the committee.

“House Republicans are turning this Congress into the most closed and secretive Congress in history. They are ignoring the most pressing issues facing our nation, from stagnant wages and crumbling infrastructure to immigration reform and gun safety. They have repeatedly blocked common sense legislation, while instead advancing measures intended to help the wealthiest among us. In this environment, Congresswoman Torres will be an important voice as Democrats fight for working people. Ms. Torres has served as a state senator, an assembly member, a mayor, a council member, and a 9-1-1 operator. She has seen and done it all. She has been a champion for improving our healthcare system, and an advocate for underserved communities. Ms. Torres has worked on everything from housing issues to legislation to help our veterans. And she is the mother of a veteran of the United States Air Force. Her experience will serve her well on the Rules Committee.”
