Democrats Stand up to Republican Betrayal of Middle Class Voters

Expose Republican Scheme to Pay for Massive Tax Giveaways for Billionaires by Gutting Medicaid and Food Assistance

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Republicans on the House Rules Committee voted to advance Donald Trump’s extreme budget scheme to cut Medicaid, food assistance, and programs working families count on—all so they can fund massive tax giveaways for billionaire donors and big corporations.

“Democrats want tax relief for workers, not the ultra-rich. Democrats support Medicaid and SNAP because we know these programs are essential for keeping millions of Americans who live on the brink from falling off the cliff,” said Ranking Member Jim McGovern.

This crucial Rules Committee vote means House Speaker Mike Johnson can now bring Trump’s extreme budget scheme to the Floor of the U.S. House. Democrats need just three commonsense Republicans to join us in voting to stop these radical cuts.

Before Republicans voted along partisan lines to advance their extreme budget scheme, Democrats introduced dozens of amendments, exposing Republicans’ budget as a scam to pay for their tax giveaways for billionaires by cutting services that everyday people rely on.

Republicans rejected every single Democratic idea, including amendments that would:

  • Protect Medicaid from Republican cuts, including protecting funding that would specifically reach Americans with disabilities and nursing home residents;
  • Ensure Republicans do not use cuts to Medicaid to fund massive tax breaks for their billionaire donors and those earning over $100 million per year;
  • Protect access to school meals for kids across the country;
  • Protect a commonsense Biden-era policy enacted by Democrats that has lowered prescription drug prices and saved Americans hundreds and thousands of dollars per year in medical costs;
  • Demand Truth from Republicans by preventing baseless economic projections designed to hide the true cost of massive tax breaks for billionaire donors – and instead cite forecasts from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

House Republicans continue betraying the middle class of this country and those who aspire to be in it. Democrats will continue to stay united in resoundingly and overwhelmingly rejecting this Republican betrayal.

The Committee on Rules was formally constituted as a select committee on April 2, 1789 and is one of the oldest committees in the House. An appointment to the Rules Committee gives Members significant ability to influence virtually all major legislation as it heads to the House Floor for a vote.
