McGovern Congratulates New Rules Committee Chair Virginia Foxx
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Ranking Member of the House Rules Committee James P. McGovern (D-MA) released this statement following Representative Virginia Foxx being named Chair of the House Rules Committee for the 119th Congress:
“Congratulations to Representative Foxx on being named Chairwoman of the House Rules Committee. We rarely see eye to eye, but Virginia is a dedicated, hardworking public servant. I’m sure we will have major disagreements about everything from the bills before our committee to the role of government in our country. But I appreciate her candor and commitment to her district. We served with each other on the Rules Committee in the past, and I hope we can continue to foster an environment of civility and respect, even when we disagree.
“America wants Congress to end the extremism and get to work. One way to do that at the Rules Committee is by promoting bipartisanship—allowing more debate, more bipartisan amendments, more time to read bills, and a more open and transparent process. I will continue to push these principles in the 119th Congress. I wish Representative Foxx the best as she takes on this important responsibility.”

The Committee on Rules was formally constituted as a select committee on April 2, 1789 and is one of the oldest committees in the House. An appointment to the Rules Committee gives Members significant ability to influence virtually all major legislation as it heads to the House Floor for a vote.
