Sessions: We Stand With Israel

WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions, Chairman of the House Rules Committee, released the following statement expressing his support for a resolution to disapprove of the United Nations’ dangerous anti-Israel resolution: “The UN resolution sets a dangerous precedent that completely undermines any future potential of a bilateral agreement between Israel and Palestine. Since 1972 the United States has defended the people of Israel and vetoed 42 anti-Israel resolutions. The Obama Administration’s failure to veto this measure violates our longstanding policy to protect Israel from such one-sided resolutions. “I have always stood with our friends in Israel and I will continue to fight to ensure we preserve and protect our precious relationship with them. Thankfully come January 20th we will have a unified Republican government and someone in the White House who will join Republicans in the House and Senate in reaffirming our commitment to the people of Israel.” To learn more about H. Res 11, please visit the Rules Committee website.

Sessions Votes to Restore Congressional Oversight to the Rulemaking Process

WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions, Chairman of the House Committee on Rules, released the following statement applauding the passage of a bill that requires agencies to submit major regulations to Congress for approval: “It is no secret that the Obama Administration has played a heavy hand in doling out thousands upon thousands of regulations that have cost American taxpayers billions of dollars. That is why we are hitting the ground running this Congress by rolling back the president’s regulatory agenda and providing American small businesses and families with the relief that they desperately need. While we still have a lot of work to do, the passage of the REINS Act lays the ground work for our regulatory overhaul that will unburden the free market from the arbitrary and unnecessary grip of federal bureaucrats. “As an original co-sponsor of the REINS Act, I have proudly voted for it each and every time it has come to the House Floor. However, this time is different. This time, because we have a unified Republican government, this bill has a real opportunity to make it to the President’s desk and be signed into law when President-elect Trump takes his seat in the Oval Office. “I am delighted that President-elect Trump understands the importance of this legislation and has voiced his support saying ‘I will sign the REINS Act should it reach my desk as President and more importantly I will work hard to get it passed. The REINS Act is one major step toward getting our government under control.’ It is refreshing to have a leader who shares Americans’ same pro-growth sentiments and understands the importance of cutting through unnecessary red tape that has strangled our economy and hampered job growth. I look forward to the Senate taking up this important piece of legislation so when our new president takes the oath of office later this month this can be one of his first orders of business.”

Sessions Votes to Stop Last Minute Regulations from the Obama Administration

WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX), Chairman of the House Rules Committee, today released the following statement after voting in favor of a bill to halt the implementation of high-cost or politically-driven regulations during the last days of the Obama Administration: As Co-Chairman of the Article 1 Task Force I am pleased that one of our first actions in this new Congress is to put a stop to any last-minute attempts from this Administration to implement costly, politically motivated regulations. For the past eight years President Obama and Democrats have saddled American small businesses and families with 2,998 regulations costing $870.3 billion. Enough is enough - we must put a stop to President Obama’s runaway regulatory agenda. This measure will give us the tools necessary to halt any final attempts of this Administration to push through their pro-regulatory agenda."

Sessions Applauds Adoption of the Rules Package

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX) Chairman of the House Rules Committee, released the following statement applauding the passage of the measure to adopt the rules for the 115th Congress:

"Last November the American people entrusted Republicans with the responsibility to represent them and execute their vision for our country. This Congress we have a historic opportunity to show Americans that they have rightly placed their faith in us to move our country forward. Today’s passage of House Resolution 5, to adopt the rules for the 115th Congress, lays the foundation for our work ahead while building upon our continued efforts to increase transparency, improve accountability, and streamline House processes.

"Since Republicans regained control in the House, we have reined in out of control spending by cutting discretionary spending all the way back to 2008 levels. Today, House Republicans have taken the next step by strengthening our budget enforcement tools to reduce spending and scale back the size and scope of our bloated government. This package also makes a commitment to address our long term spending problem and make necessary reforms to entitlement programs by establishing a point of order against any bill that would increase net deficits by $5 billion or more in any of the 4 consecutive 10-year periods following enactment.

"As Co-Chairman of the Article I Task Force I am also pleased that this package continues our work by instructing committees to establish authorization and oversight plans to address unauthorized programs and agencies within their jurisdiction. This critical step will halt the growing number of unauthorized appropriations and streamline unnecessary, costly programs.

"As we begin the 115th Congress we know that have an important job to do, and now more than ever it is critical that we hit the ground running and get to work on behalf of the American people. I proudly brought this important measure to the House floor to provide Members on both sides of the aisle the tools necessary to represent their constituents with fairness, openness, and integrity."

Sessions Welcomes New Members to the Rules Committee

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX), Chairman of the House Rules Committee, today released the following statement welcoming Congressman Ken Buck (R-CO) and Congresswoman Liz Cheney (R-WY) to the Rules Committee:

“I have had the privilege of visiting Congressman Buck in his home district and witnessing firsthand how he interacts with his constituents, his family, and his colleagues. As a three-term District Attorney in his home state of Colorado and a prosecutor at the U.S. Department of Justice he successfully worked to make his community safer and fought day in and day out to enforce and protect our nation’s rule of law. Congressman Buck is a thoughtful leader who will bring fresh, leading edge ideas to the Rules Committee and I am pleased to have him be a part of our team.

“As a strong constitutional conservative, Congresswoman Cheney was chosen by the people of Wyoming to represent them because she understands what it takes to create a safer, stronger America, put Americans back to work, and restore the balance of powers. From her days in the State Department as an expert in U.S. Policy in the Middle East, to her critical advocacy work on Constitutional authority, as well as her dedication to helping veterans in her community, she has gained important insight and knowledge about some of the most pressing issues facing our nation. I have no doubt that Congresswoman Cheney will be an exceptional new Member of Congress and bring tremendous value to the important work that we do at the Rules Committee.

“These two members will bring new viewpoints and ideas to our committee, encourage robust discussion, and most importantly work with integrity and transparency on behalf of their constituents and the American people. It is an honor to welcome them to the Rules Committee and I look forward to working with them in the 115th Congress."

Sessions Supports Transparent Insurance Standards Act of 2016

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions, Chairman of the House Committee on Rules, today released the following statement in support of a measure to provide greater transparency and congressional oversight of international insurance standards setting processes, and for other purposes:

“Historically insurance companies in the United States have always operated under a state-based regulatory model. However, the international insurance community is pushing regulatory standards that are not congruent with our current model, which is forcing American companies to do business on an uneven playing field. We cannot allow the international community to dictate regulatory standards that would make the U.S. less competitive, weaken consumer protections, and drive up costs on American families.

“I have always been a fierce advocate for the free-enterprise system and regulating in a smart, effective way with responsible oversight. Today’s bill does just that. It enhances Congressional oversight of any changes to international insurance regulatory standards and creates a set of requirements that the FIO or the Federal Reserve must comply with during any negotiations. In addition, this legislation ensures transparency and public accountability by requiring the FIO and the Fed to publish any proposed changes and provide ample time for a public comment period.

“It is critical that states, Congress, and the Executive Branch work together on this issue. As a united front we will show the international insurance community that we will not be susceptible to bad deals and that we will fight to ensure any standards or agreements that we participate in are in the best interest of U.S consumers, our economy, and American families.”

Sessions Applauds Passage of Bill to Fund Critical Water and Infrastructure Projects

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions, Chairman of the House Committee on Rules, today released the following statement after voting for a measure to provide for improvements to the rivers and harbors of the United States, to provide for the conservation and development of water and related resources:
"Our nation’s waterways and infrastructure projects play an integral role in our domestic security and our economy. Today’s fiscally responsible bill cuts through unnecessary red tape that has hindered essential Army Corps of Engineers projects – including expediting the permitting process for the Lower Bois D’arc Creek in Texas – appropriately allocates funds to improve drinking water, helps draught-stricken communities in the West, and improves our water resources infrastructure. I proudly supported this critical package to protect water and strengthen essential infrastructure projects in Texas and across the country."

Sessions Statement on Short Term Funding Measure

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions, Chairman of the House Committee on Rules, today released the following statement after voting for a measure to provide funding for the government:
"As Members of Congress we are entrusted with the responsibility to effectively and responsibly fund our nation’s government. Today’s bill funds the government into the new year and increases spending to ensure our men and women in uniform have the resources they need to protect our freedom both at home and abroad. While I do not believe that short term funding measures are an effective tool, I believe that as a unified government in the coming 115th Congress we have an opportunity to implement thoughtful and deliberate legislative solutions that will be considered under a Republican Administration. I look forward to working with my colleagues in Congress and our new friend in the White House to put forth common sense policies that get our country back on the right track and make our nation safer and stronger."
